Former Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison for multiple counts of criminal sexual conduct.

It is a challenge, but regardless of the outcome, reporting will increase the chances the perpetrator will eventually be caught and made to face legal consequences. If the desired outcome is not possible within the criminal justice system, a civil suit can be filed. This is a lawsuit in civil court that awards monetary compensation.

Entitled to Financial Compensation

Survivors have the right to receive direct financial compensation from a state agency, if the crime is reported within a predetermined amount of time—usually seventy-two hours. Maximum compensation benefits vary by state and help cover attorney fees, emergencies, lost wages, medical costs, mental health counseling, moving expenses (when recommended by police or therapists), rehabilitation, and funerals following a sexual assault. Funds often come from convicted perpetrators who are court ordered to pay court fees and through the federal Victims of Crime Act, which was enacted in 1984. The application process varies per state but typically requires the survivor to submit an application to the state agency between 180 days and two years following the crime. Medical bills, a police report, and other relevant documents are needed to support the claim.
